Wedding Dinner, 8th March 2008
Attended one of my high school buddy's wedding dinner last night.
Knew him for quite some years already. We did kept in touch even after high school, college... but somehow when we started our own "career path", if you can call it that, we started to stayed out of contact with each other.
I think only bump into him with his then girlfriend (that he is getting married to) at a toyshop. But, that was it. Couple of weeks ago, got a call from him. "I'm getting married!".
"Wait, wut huh?" was my exact reaction. A few years, we didn't speak to each other, and this is the first thing he says to me. A bit lost for words. I didn't even congratulate him properly.
From what I know, when he passed me his wedding invitation card, he would be inviting some of the friends we had in common. So, that's not that bad. At least I won't show up as a wallflower or something.
So yesterday, with a blue long sleeve shirt and a pair of black slacks, I went to the hotel where the dinner is at. As soon as the escalator has moved me to a view where I can see everyone there, uh oh... everyone's wearing their coat. And, also the group of friends standing nearby.
Those who know me personally knows that I don't really like being stand out, keeping a low profile and such. Thought it's no big deal. I could still move steathily to the group of friends there.
Oh Shi-, one of them called my name out loud... everyone's looking at me.
Yeah, I know. I have issues.
Anyway, D (with his gf), SP, CL and F is there. All, as far as I know, are his close high school friends. Even though we hung out separately with the groom. They were like "Hey, how are you?", "Long time no see!", "How's it going?"... i just shook their hands and said "Speechless."
We haven't seen each other in quite some time. D and F, yes even after high school... but still. Quite some time.
Are we the only ones from his school days here? I asked one of them. The answer's pretty much a 'yeah'. Let's talk about them for a bit.
D's one of the groom's more closer friends. As far as when I'm around, we used to hang out together at times. All 3 of us would crack alot of jokes. Most memorable thing we did with D was playing Interstate 76 on the net, with a 56k speed modem till 3am. On a school night.
Once D confided with me on ICQ with his relationship problem. Seems like almost everyone confided with me with their relationship problems back then. As if I have this carboard cardout booth set up, that has a sign that says "The doctor is IN".
His girlfriend look sorta familiar.
SP was this guy who spent a year or two in Taiwan, studying. And then he came back and joined the class me and the groom was in. He is weird. Mysteriously (kekeke) weird. We still think he is. His hair gives me the impression that it's a toupe.
Errr... it was always like this. I think.
CL was this... sigh, how do I put it? That annoying bugger that would cling on to you like some kind of parasite. You know, that guy you knew, when he asked something from you; you said NO and he would go all, please please please please? I'm not sure how he was close to the groom... but I actually was the same class with him, and tuition classes. When I could, I would avoid him like the plaque.
He seems to be more matured now, in which, is a great thing.
F would be the dude we used to go to cybercafe almost every weekend to play network game of Battlefield 1942. The groom and I would usually team up. F, with his friend.
Things were a bit awkward at first, before the dinner. Seems like everyone's in the IT field. The groom didn't really got the chance to talk to us. Busy getting congratulated and thanking people for attending and all.
The dinner was alright. 8 dishes. D and F has got the previlage to throw flowers when the bride and groom walks in. LOL WTF.. they usually have little girls in cute lil pink dresses to do that. I couldn't stop laughing. I told them to aim right between their eyes.
We talked about almost everything. Work stuff. PS3 has no games. LCD and Plasma TV. The election. The hot opposition politician back home. The "dry spell". XBOX hueg, etc.
Wait, wait.. You must be thinking, after typing so many words. There's no talk about the looks of the women there? To tell the truth. Think they had a shortages of good looking women there. So so lah. Average. Didn't really pay much attention actually.
Before the dinner was about to end, the groom came over and told us not to leave so soon. He's going to come over and talk to us after others have left. We told him, sure and get your butt back to "yum seng"ing.
By the time he got to our table to do the toast, he was tipsy. By the time everything is done and came over to our table to catch up with us.. he's on the verge of getting drunk. He said he felt like he's a terrible person, cause he haven't been getting in touch with us that much, these years. Oh I forgot to mention, he's going to Singapore to work for a year at the end of this month.
He spoke like as if he's not coming back. Dude, it's only a year! Geez.
Let's talk about the groom. He's the dude that I shared many same interest with, video games, movies, anime, toys... LOL he used to complain that everywhere I go , I would meet girls. Which is not true. It only happened, like a handful of times when we would go out or something. And this guy who complains about that, is married.
Anyway, I "ll end this post, by wishing the bride and groom all the best in their new journey of life together. Congratulations!
