Cutie Honey

Kono goro hayari no onna no ko~ Oshiri na chiisa na onna no ko~

Honey Flash!

WAHahahaHa!! This movie is the epitome of fun, cute and campiness!!

A live-action adaptation of Go Nagai's 1973 anime, Cutey Honey...

On the left corner, sporting in pink, black, pink and MORE PINK costume: the super android Kisaragi Honey aka Cutie Honey. She possesses super human strength, speed, morph and the "Ai" System, developed by her late father Kisaragi Honey. The "Ai" System, "can renew life, but it is unable to create life". And, of course she's cute and hot! :P

On the right corner, the evil organisation Panther Claw! Besides looking completely ridiculous and absurd, Panther Claw is led by the aging Sister Jill and her four horsemen of sorts: Panther Claw's singing sensation Black Claw, the S&M chick Cobalt Claw, the Kabuki with a squeaky voice Scarlet Claw and the golden Amazon chick Gold Claw. Sister Jill wants the "Ai" System by whatever means, so that she can gain immortality and everlasting beauty... and that means kidnapping Honey's scientist uncle to lure her out!!

Now Cutie Honey must join forces with the cool detective lady Aki Natsuko and the suave reporter (or is he?) Seiji Hayami to save her uncle and bring down Panther Claw!

In a nutshell, that's basically the plot. Don't expect any serious drama or winning an Oscar from this movie. However, I felt that the movie definitely managed to retain its anime essence.

Edit: Huh, maybe a bit too enthusiastic to write the review, hence keep forgetting some stuff I wanted to write. Heh. There's also a sub plot on how Honey tries to fit in with the normal society folks. A few scenes seem pretty draggy.

Special effects are creatively done and convincing in a very anime-like manner. Some scenes, usually flashbacks or montages are anime. The battle scene in the beginning of the movie is sooo fun fun fun! Panther Claw's Michael Jackson style hat tipping pose minions are hilarious! Minions flying everywhere after getting hit by Honey! XD

The soundtrack is mostly jazz and lounge music style with women singing ba-ba-ba-baaa-ahhh~ in the background. I dunno about you, but I just love it. Koda Kumi's remake of the theme song "Cutie Honey" is catchy and hip! After all, it's one of my overplayed song in my Winamp. :P

Acting? Heheh! Eriko Sato, the bikini pin up girl who plays Cutie Honey is like an anime character came to life. Probably a bit too cute and bubbly for some people's taste, but in my opinion, definitely suits the tone of the movie.

Guess who's the director? It's none other than Hideaki Anno. Yup, the guy who directed the anime Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Here's the official movie site with trailer: http://cutiehoney.com

Remember to check your brain elsewhere before watching this movie. A perfect movie for those who wants to enjoy a no brainer movie after a hard day's work at the office (or school)!
